Fragmentation means the data is stored in pieces across the hard disk. When the Operating System is unable to allocate contiguous space to store the data, it is saved on different areas of the disk and not as a whole. This leads to longer read time of the files, since the data has to be read from various locations of the disk, due to which overall system performance suffers.

Advanced System Optimizer - Disk Defragment and Disk Optimizer

What is defragmentation?

Defragmentation is a method of rearranging the data into sequential/continuous order so that it is easily accessible, resulting in faster data access times and improved system performance. It also improves system startup time.
Once the disk is defragmented, contiguous free space is available so that data can be saved in a continuous manner.

How often should one defragment the disk?

Since data is read from and written to the hard disk continuously and applications are installed and removed on a regular basis, the disk gets fragmented. This prevents storing of data in a sequential manner. Therefore, to store data sequentially, to restore hard disk storage, to enhance system performance and to remove the fragments from the hard disk, one should perform defragmentation at least once a week.

How can Advanced System Optimizer help?

Disk Optimizer of Advanced System Optimizer 3 is a disk defragmentation tool which optimizes the placement of the data on the disk. It is an important tool which is easy to use and defragments the hard disk for faster data access times and improved system performance.
It also includes a scheduler, which makes the task of defragmentation easier by scheduling the defragmentation on the desired disk on the day and time specified.

Benefits of using ASO3’s Disk Optimizer

  • Reduces system boot-up time
  • Improves application response time
  • Extends the life of the hard drive
  • Makes your system more responsive

It is recommended to use Disk Optimizer of Advanced System Optimizer 3 on a regular basis to optimize the overall performance of your system.

A registry cleaner is a piece of software which is designed to remove invalid and unwanted registry entries from the Windows registry.

Registry is a critical part of Windows. Since the registry is in constant due to regular PC usage, it can get cluttered over time. Installing and removing software regularly and even moving and accessing data on the PC creates more and more registry entries, thereby increasing it sizes and decreasing the systems performance. Therefore, you need to clean the obsolete entries on a regular basis using a good registry cleaner, which will not only clean the registry but will also optimize it for faster performance.

The entries become invalid when uninstalled programs do not delete their associated registry entries or when they point to document files, sound files, help files, font files, history files and application paths that no longer exist on system or have been moved from their original physical locations.

Such entries should be removed regularly using a good registry cleaner.

How and when to use it?

Registry cleaners should be used on a regular basis to remove obsolete and invalid entries from the Windows registry. Removing such entries manually is tedious as well as dangerous. Besides, you need to know the registry quite well to tamper with it.

Get the Security Benefits of Hypervisors to Your PC http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/get-the-security-benefits-of-hypervisors-to-your-pc/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/get-the-security-benefits-of-hypervisors-to-your-pc/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:44:42 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/get-the-security-benefits-of-hypervisors-to-your-pc/

The benefits of Hypervisors is that they are light weighted, unbelievably fast, extensible Benefits of HyperVpluggable for your personal computers. Generally, many others use the hypervisors technology in order to build virtualization products. By doing so, it is easily possible to reduce the total cost of the enterprise and of course, reduce the cost of het multi server market. To introduce the benefits of hypervisors, they leverage the virtualization hardware supports that are included in the new processors especially from Intel and of course from AMD. This provision brings down the systems control and security. This will explain the benefits of hypervisors now. The major benefits of hypervisors are the security benefits for any personal computers.

The benefits of hypervisors as well as the main feature are the design of the hypervisors architecture that is pluggable. The pluggable architectural helps in developing a wide spread or wide choice of hypervisor based functional modules. Hypervisors technology is used by many organizations as it is very much flexible and the hypervisors permits organizations to come up with tailor made solutions for the organizations as per their requirements and necessities. This is definitely one of the great benefits of hypervisors.

Do you know that hypervisor is a multi tier product? The reason why we say that there are unlimited benefits of hypervisors is because these hypervisors can be used even for a personal computer as a security utility and can also be expanded and configured as per the arising needs. This can be done with out much challenge. Hypervisor Software Development Kit also known as SDK is available for developers whether they are individuals or organizations. This is definitely beneficial as SDK can be used by those who work on developing customized hypervisor solutions. Hypervisor debugger is a stand alone product that is available for developers. This is one of the benefits of hypervisor. The reason for standalone product is because you will see no native hypervisor debuggers and hence it has become necessary to develop a customer made debugger. You can definitely add this as one of the benefits of hypervisors.

Tell me how many hypervisors are compatible with the various versions of Microsoft Windows XP, Windows Vista and finally Windows server 2003? We would have been dreaming for such benefits of hypervisors. This is possible as the hypervisors currently works on internal beta release and of course it is compatible with the above mentioned versions of Microsoft. There is no doubt that hypervisors are the best security for your system and they are definitely very powerful constructs. Technically sound people do agree the benefits of hypervisors are loaded.

Hypervisor is just a thin layer of software meant for the system. This hypervisor is above the hardware and below the operating system. The design is made in such a way that even the operating system that is running ahead of the hypervisors or at the top of the hypervisors cannot conclude that they are a virtual machine hosted by the hypervisor. The operating system will understand and assume that it is directly linking and coordinating with other system hardware resources. Thus the interaction is monitored by the hypervisor. Thus the hypervisor had complete control over the activities of the machine. Thus the benefits of hypervisors are unlimited.

Comparison between Various Hyper-V Server Editions http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/comparison-between-various-hyper-v-server-editions/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/comparison-between-various-hyper-v-server-editions/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:38:42 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/comparison-between-various-hyper-v-server-editions/

HyperV Server edition compareHyperV clearly has a whole lot of advantages and there might be various numbers of reasons why many set up HyperV environment and prefer it too. You can best utilize the benefits of HyperV without compromising on the 64 bit compatibility. It is possible to facilitate product evaluations, test labs testing and learning environments too with the help of HyperV. If you are aware, HyperV works on entry level 64 bit hardware too. However, the CPU capacity and the latest BIOS update must be available in order to support the hardware virtualization.

With complete supported software versions, you can now make a blast to deploy or organize full scale test environments. You can even use even the 64 bit version of the exchange server 2007 from the Microsoft. Once you are done with the initial set up of the deployment, you may easily redeploy every time you need to begin from the basics or if you have to check on a new product or even when you want to start a new training or class session. This could be done easily anytime you want to do thus exhibiting the advantage of HyperV.

Imagine a situation where your customer has two domain controllers or DCs and that you are deploying a test environment. Say your customer also has SQL server running with two SharePoint front end servers, a hub transport server, an exchange mail box server 2007 and a client access server. With all these combination, it is certainly going to take a lot of effort. However, if you have a better and large environment, say for instance with 600 virtual machines, you can easily reinstall the VMs every time or every week you want or even every time a new lab environment is required. Such deployments are very important when you want to automate. Thus HyperV makes a whole lot of difference.

HyperV is basically a windows technology. It is easy to combine HyperV with WMI or Windows Management Instrumentation, WDS or Windows Deployment Services, Windows Power Shell, AIK or Windows Automated Installation Kit and PE or Pre-installation Environment 2.0. With these you can enable deployments at full scale just at a wink of your eye which means it takes much lesser time. Watching the installation screen and the progress bar when the system is deploying and configuring them is definitely an interesting aspect. However, this may not be your priority. Thus HyperV is definitely makes life easy.

You can also deploy HyperV servers, Virtual Machines, server applications without interaction from any administrator, guest operating systems using WDS, unattend.xml files, customer install images and WMI scripts. The idea behind this is to pre-configure WDS environment first for once and later installs test systems based on requirement. The same applies with reinstalling teaching environment, developing, testing customer solutions and troubleshooting various critical issues under different configurations. To launch the preboot execution environment, also known as PXE, you just need to press the F12 key in order to interact while deployment. If you are using the Startrom.n12, you may even skip this step. Earlier default Startrom.com was used in WDS configuration.

Where to Check For Free HyperV Windows Server? http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/where-to-check-for-free-hyperv-windows-server/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/where-to-check-for-free-hyperv-windows-server/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:32:13 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/where-to-check-for-free-hyperv-windows-server/ Are you aware that it is much inexpensive when you take advantage of virtualization via Windows Server, XP or Vista or even Windows 2007 and 2008? Yes with Microsoft platform, you can save huge cost with hyperV management with the flexible licensing policies too. You can now club multiple server behaviors into virtual machines also known as VMs. By doing this, you can make good use of your investment that you have made on your server. The virtual machines run on just a single machine. By single machine, I mean physical machine here. The virtual machines run efficiently on various operations systems including Windows, Linux etc. They leverage a capacity of x64 computing. If you are using HyperV via Windows, then it is easy to save cost. You must have read articles on HyperV or virtualization through Windows 2008 R2 if you had plans of virtualization for your organization earlier. Let me also give a heads up on the same to you now.

HyperV through Windows server works on the Windows server 2008 virtualization architecture and adds many new features to increase product flexibility. This flexibility helps organizations in deployment and managing life cycle of applications. You can also consolidate workloads thus reducing server sprawl. This concept is used by many of the professionals who use virtualization or HyperV. You can also deploy virtualization using clustering technology if you are aiming at a robust IT infrastructure. This feature will be handy for availability and quick recovery during disaster. It is quiet common for end users to look for better flexibility always. Thus windows server 2008 R2 HyperV offers better flexibility. Flexibility here works fine with live migration as they are integrated with Windows 2008 R2 server and also Microsoft HyperV server 2008 R2. The concept of HyperV live migrations enables you to move virtual machines that are in running state from one HyperV physical host to another one. You can do the movement without disrupting the service levels. With live migration you can maintain dynamic load balancing, availability during maintenance, less power consumption and VM placement.

You must be thinking how much the HyperV must be costing even though we say that it reduced your overall cost and increases efficiency. Microsoft Hyper V server 2008 R2 is available for free and can be downloaded from the Microsoft website. This is a stand alone product and hence you do not require CALs. However, you will be requiring CALs for all Windows server virtualized OS or Operating system that is hosted on the 2008 server. Microsoft server HyperV 2008 R2 is available in many languages like English, Japanese, German, Spanish, French, Chinese – simplified and Hong Kong style, Chinese traditional, Korean, Italian, Russian, Portuguese etc. Thus, you will see the usage all over the world. You may use this at various phases that include Testing and Development, Consolidation of server, Consolidation of branch office, Desktop virtualization that are hosted. You get many other features that are for free like clustering, large memory support and live migration.

How to Save Cost for Your Small Business with HyperV? http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/how-to-save-cost-for-your-small-business-with-hyperv/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/how-to-save-cost-for-your-small-business-with-hyperv/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:21:07 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/how-to-save-cost-for-your-small-business-with-hyperv/ In many organizations, users’ computers are separated from the operating system physically. Likewise, the computers are also separated from software applications, database management system or DMS, communication procedures etc. This process of set up is known as virtualization of computers or hypervisor or HyperV in short. You would have seen the normal set up where the hardware and software is centralized in the data management centre. Here, instead of desktop computers, virtual machines also known as VMs are used in the place of desktop computers. Users can access this virtual machine from any corner of the world. Thus HyperV enables the users to access any program or applications that they need immediately.

The reason why small companies or small businesses prefer HyperV is because it is relatively less in cost. It is easily affordable and if you an individual user or even if you are a person working from home running a small business, you can get HyperV for free. There are many websites that allows you to get free HyperV. There is no doubt that HyperV is of immense use if you running a small time business. With very less investment, you can make good money. You will realize it if your business or organization is based completely in information technology. There will be necessity for up gradation of the operation system programs and of course operation system software’s regularly. With the entry of HyperV concept of virtualization of desktops, it is easy to bring down the cost by simplifying the IT architecture. You will find HyperV helping you save cost not for the time being but on a long run. Even managing IT infrastructure, flexibility, cost of software, core issues, IT support and hardware related issues are controlled by HyperV usage.

You might be wondering as how useful HyperV is for your business. Let me make it clear to you now. By using this technology, you can bring down the server numbers that you currently have in your organization. You might have estimated ‘n’ number of servers based on your requirements. However, with HyperV you can bring down the number, thus saving cost. You need not even buy machines physically and you also save cost by power usage. Since there are fewer desktops physically, you will not be using power to the extent you were using before. Thus it helps in low maintenance and very less time is invested on hardware setting or adjustments. Apart from that, there is no necessity to upload software’s to each and every system. Since it is all in virtual you will only update the virtual system thus saving cost again instead of buying too many software rights.

You must now be suspecting on the reliability or the so called down time. You must forget about down time as there is no need to install software’s or upgrade on each and every system. This concept is not used here. You will only update the virtual system and this will be used by all the users.

HyperV Management through Windows XP/Vista/Win 7 – an Introduction http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/hyperv-management-through-windows-xpvistawin-7-an-introduction/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/hyperv-management-through-windows-xpvistawin-7-an-introduction/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 20:07:57 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/hyperv-management-through-windows-xpvistawin-7-an-introduction/ HyperV Management Console

Microsoft HyperV server management console supported on Windows Server 2008 or even Vista operating system is the dominant client operation system in the current era. Here HyperV excludes support on any other operating system. This exclusion includes even Windows XP as the support is only on Windows Server 2008. You get to manage HyperV system even remotely here.

You will also find HyperV management console running on operating system that is not supported by Microsoft remote server administration tools. You can organize virtual machines in a tree view or tree list format thus controlling individual user access rights. You can maintain user audit logs and many more features to name. The key features of HyperV here are Organization of tree style, reporting of errors and extended user control. HyperV is extensively used in many organization as it saves cost by reducing the number of desktops, buying too many licenses of software, installing software on each and every desktop and of course in the form of power. Virtualization helps the small businesses in a great way. Thus virtualization is the most advanced and famous technology currently and most of the companies are making the best out of HyperV to get solution to their problems.

Since most users prefer and use Windows XP as their operating system, you will find many XP client and of course too many XP licenses too in the market. In this case, it would be better to use the remote administration of HyperV servers itself. As HyperV permits administrators to define role based access control, you can use remote desktop for various purposes by using Authorization manager.

Some of the features of HyperV management console are managing multiple HyperV servers simultaneously, supporting XP, Windows 2003, 2008, Vista, Windows 7; you get to manage virtual machines and snapshots in a better way. The reason why many prefer HyperV is because you can direct RDP to the virtual machines and system administrators gets to control the users’ access using the licensing tool in management features. You can also maintain an extensive audit logs and the console runs on Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 2000. However, the HyperV management console also requires few aspects like platform. It prefers any platform that runs on Microsoft .NET 2.0

Once you are done with the HyperV installation, go ahead and install guest images which run on the virtual server. It is important to navigate the HyperV administration console and also the settings of the virtual server. This setting is available for configuration and can be applied to all the guest sessions on the server. So, always remember to have a quick navigation before you actually start moving towards the installation of the images.

To launch the HyperV administrative console, do open the HyperV administrative console and there is couple of ways if you want to access the options for configuration. You can access the server manager tool and monitor or in other words administer host server via the server manager. You can start server manager tool if you want to view and edit the settings of HyperV.

What are ‘Netbooks’? Part 2 http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/what-are-netbooks-part-2/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/what-are-netbooks-part-2/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 19:57:12 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/?p=250 Read Previous Post

Netbooks are small versions of notebooks with screen size varying from 7-10 inches and keyboard size 80-90% of the laptops, weigh 2-3 pounds.

Designed in such a way that computing, internet surfing can be done in a much reasonable price with complete mobility. Definitely memory storage and the Hard Disk storage are quite low. Netbooks are also under-powered but Windows XP operating system and many more in-built functions which come in this small package do not require that much power to run and they are perfectly designed for the job they are assigned to do.

Netbooks would not replace notebooks so early but people are excited to buy this because of its attractive features. Mobility, affordable price, size, weight and the way it’s formatted with its cute look and reasonable battery life make it a smart device to go for. Schools are also taking the advantage of the small sized magical device, the size of a text book to teach students. Kids also find it manageable.

History

The vision was to develop a small sized, inexpensive, mobile, wireless communicating and computing system. The usage of netbooks has spread like fire since 2007 when it was first launched in market. The demand for netbooks has been accelerating and eating up the market for laptops and PCs.

The word Netbook was introduced by Psion, a consumer hardware company which is also into developing games and other softwares. Later Asus came into the picture with Eee PC, a light-weighted, less power consuming, miniature wireless laptop experience.

The existence of netbooks can be said to have been strongly inspired from the project named OLPC meaning ONE LAPTOP PER CHILD. The project was thought of to provide inexpensive mini laptops at very low prices say $150-$200 to educate more and more of children from poor countries. From the very tender age the children would be given computer knowledge and they would grow up to become young computer literates. Many poor and developing countries had shown good interest in this project viz China, Brazil, India and Thailand.

With a useless keyboard and the cumbersome interface of the pocket size mobile cum net phone, it was difficult to experience an effortless approach to web browsing and emailing with complete mobility. Netbooks in this genre are far more intelligently designed. This was another reason that gels quite well with the birth of netbooks.

With horrifying economic conditions around, search of quality electronic products and its price are elements of serious concern. No one wants to compromise on quality; moreover price tags also should not show shocking figures. The origination of netbooks can be a consequence of the above.

Presumably with the origin of this hi-tech electronic module with advantageous modifications done periodically, laptops may have to take the back seat.

Distinguishing features:

  • Netbooks are stylish and have a very eye-catching visual appeal.
  • Its small size makes it extensively mobile.
  • Inexpensive and affordable way to use almost all the features of a laptop except the CD/DVD drives.
  • Memory space and hard disk space is less.
  • Do not replace PCs and Laptops but create their own niche market.
  • Recommended in schools for kids for imparting lectures coz of its physical parameters viz size, weight.
  • Battery power lasts for over 2-3 hours.
  • Less resource consuming operating systems used viz Windows XP or Linux (Vista is not very popular in netbooks).

Disadvantages:

Netbooks are small and handy but the small keyboard and the small screen is not always comfortable to work on. It’s more like a toy as kids can use it more conveniently. Children have small hands and the keyboard size is absolutely apt for them. Parents look forward to buy their children this useful device. They can learn, increase their comprehension power and develop the knack of keeping the world under their fingertips. For elders, lengthy typing is a problem and moreover the screen size doesn’t help doing critical office work.

Battery life is too low and disallows constant work on it without worries. During travel time it is a big problem. Although netbooks are characterized for ultra mobility but then the definition becomes subtle as the battery power sometimes extends help for only 2-3 hours.

Even though usage of CD/DVD drives do not come in the daily activity list but we cannot deny the fact that these are requisite features of any computer user.

Hard disk storage and memory storage inhibits routine work on this. People are maintaining notebooks along with netbooks for their effortless daily computer activities.

What is HyperV Server and Why is it Free http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/what-is-hyperv-server-and-why-is-it-free-2/ http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/what-is-hyperv-server-and-why-is-it-free-2/#comments Thu, 18 Feb 2010 19:49:35 +0000 admin http://blogs.systweak.com/archives/2010/02/19/what-is-hyperv-server-and-why-is-it-free-2/

These days with every organization looking to save operating costs, saving costs in IT too has become very important. Virtualization of servers has become the hot topic in every companies IT department. Microsoft’s HyperV Server 2008 has been instrumental in facilitating virtualization of servers for various leading companies across the world. HyperV server gives good platform for a reliable as well as optimized virtualization. As result of which there is far better server utilization resulting in reducing costs on hardware. HyperV server is actually a stand alone product which is consists of the following components:

  • Windows Hypervisor or HyperV server
  • Windows Server Drivers
  • Components for Virtualization

HyperV server from Microsoft

With the help of HyperV server the overhead costs can be reduced. For instance if a company has about 20 physical servers with each performing different functionalities, the server count of physical servers can easily be reduced to 5 but still keeping all the 20 server in place by the process of virtualization . All the servers can be virtualized in such way 4 or 5 servers are operated in one physical machine in other words many servers can operate with the same hardware components. This clearly reduces overhead costs by about 3 or 4 times easily.

Microsoft office HyperV server 2008 is available for free download in the Microsoft’s website. One of the main reasons why Microsoft offers free download of HyperV server is to counter VMware. Before HyperV servers came into place VMware was a more popular choice. So in order to popularize their product Microsoft strategically offered this free download facility. As VMware too increased its license fees slowly companies started turning towards these HyperV servers. Once they started testing it they eventually came to a conclusion that it is considerably advantageous than VMware.

The main reason for companies to move towards virtualization is cost. It is believed that VMware is about 6 times more costly than HyperV. This is precisely the reason why most of the companies which started with VMware have moved towards HyperV server as they expanded their infrastructure realizing that VMware is expensive. VMware licensing costs are pretty high. HyperV server is now a part of Windows Server 2008 as result of which companies can easily move to Virtualization with no additional costs virtually.

Companies also save a lot of money on training costs when they opt to go for HyperV. When companies use VMware for virtualization they need to spend a lot of time and money on training their IT administrators. There is hardly any training required for HyperV server as IT administrators are already used to Microsoft infrastructure.

As companies start getting into the virtualization mode, more number of virtualization done the more complex will the environment will become. So the environment will need comprehensive critical management solution to tackle the complexity. Only Microsoft would be able to provide such a critical management solution for copping up with this dynamical infrastructure. HyperV server 2008 facilitates comprehensive management of different types of virtual resources as well as physical resources. VMware’s management solutions are not so comprehensive.
