The installation of Windows Server 2008 calls for one restart. The password needs to be changed on first logon.
The best part of the Windows Server 2008 is the new Server Manager, which makes it really easy to manage the Roles and the Features of the Server.
The first thing that we will do now is add Roles in the Server Manager.
As we see above, a fresh standard server does not have any roles pre-configured. We will add Roles in it now.
As we see, the Server allows to add all the roles possible. The one we are concerned with right now is the File Server.
The File Server is required to activate the Search Service on the Server. The new MS Search is fast and by far the best Desktop Search I’ve experienced.
We will select the File Server and the Windows Search Service from the sub-sections. It needs to be noted the there is also support for Windows Server 2003 File Services however both, Windows Search Service and Windows Server 2003 File Services can not be activated on same server simultaneously.
Our primary volume is available for Indexing. It is possible to add, remove and modify volumes for indexing at any time.
There are no more questions and the Installation of the File Server role starts.
After the Installation is successful, there is no need to restart. The Windows Search Service starts indexing the files.
We now need to add Features to the Windows Server 2008, which we will continue in the next post.Â
