Legally Evaluating Windows Server 2008 After it Expires

Systweak receives various Microsoft software to evaluate as a Gold Certified Partner. We also received the latest offering for servers, the Windows Server 2008 from Microsoft to evaluate. This is a wonderful system and we have enjoyed testing and evaluating it. Our Windows Server 2008 Evaluation Version is expiring on the 30th June 2008.

If you have not activated your Windows Server 2008 evaluation version, you can use it for 60 days for initial evaluation, Without any Activation. However, if you want to use your Windows Server 2008 past this initial grace period, you can extend this evaluation for another 60 Days period, THRICE! The total time to evaluate Windows Server 2008 becomes 240 days, which is sufficient time to realize the power of the Operating System.

It is not illegal to do this. Microsoft has an article in its Support Database, which gives information about extending the Windows Server 2008 Evaluation. It is a very simple to do so, even if you are a novice. It is obvious that if you are a novice, you would not be using Windows Server 2008!

Open Command Prompt and type slmgr.vbs.

As you can see, by running the following command:

slmgr.vbs -xpr

you can learn the expiry date of your Windows Server 2008 evaluation.

If you will run the command:

slmgr.vbs -rearm

You can RESET the licensing status of the Windows Server 2008 evaluation.

When the initial 60-day evaluation period nears its end, you can run the Slmgr.vbs script to reset the evaluation period. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Click Start, and then click Command Prompt.
  2. Type slmgr.vbs -dli, and then press ENTER to check the current status of your evaluation period.
  3. To reset the evaluation period, type slmgr.vbs –rearm, and then press ENTER.
  4. Restart the computer.

This resets the evaluation period to 60 days.
