A North Korean Company launches its own “iPad”

Everybody loves Apple products but North Korea certainly loves them in a ‘special way’. Recently, a North Korean company Ryonghung launched a new tablet along with keyboard, using the same logo as Apple.

It proves, yet again, that this country has little regard for International agreements, conventions and patent violations.

Let’s Talk About “Ryonghung iPad”

Ryonghung iPad looks like a cheap knock-off of the original product and is far from being even close to its namesake. As per various sources “The “Ryonghung iPad” was featured in the latest edition of the country’s Foreign Trade magazine”.

According to NK News, Ryonghung iPad is manufactured by Myohyang IT Company, which claimed to have a quad core 1.2 Ghz CPU, 1GB of RAM, an 8GB hard disk, an HDMI cable connection and comes with a keyboard and ‘network connection’ capabilities. It also claims that, it comes with “more than 40 pre-installed apps,” including a farming app, calculator, a health encyclopedia and a medical app, although some of these may have to be loaded through SD cards.

The tablet has a North Korean version of WebMD, and it can “diagnose up to 1,200 ailments”, together with other apps, including a dictionary.

In fact, North Korea is not doing this for the first time. In 2013, a different version of the Ryonghung iPad first appeared in the country, but at that time they didn’t use the “iPad moniker; instead, it was called the “Ryonghung-trademarked tablet computer”. The country has also done some other counterfeiting of Apple products, for example – iMac clone and an operating system called Red Star 3.0, which were mimics of OS X.

According to the advertisement; “The iPad has been highly appreciated at the third national sci-tech festival and the national intellectual property products show in 2016,”.

In case you’re thinking what Apple’s going to do about this, as they’ve  chased down third party companies for using their trademark in the past. But as this is a North Korean product, it seems Apple won’t bother pressing any charges. Moreover, Apple is a huge brand with loyal customers, so Ryonghung iPad would not be able to make any difference in their sales and demand anyhow.
