Microsoft CEO says they’ll create phones that don’t look like phones!

WHAT’S THAT NOW?

Microsoft has not introduced a new phone in over a year, reason being it’s shrinking market share in the smartphone category. Clearly, they have been busy restructuring their phone models to make a big comeback and we sincerely hope they deliver on that front. To quote Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella:

 “We make phones today, we have OEMs like HP making phones and others and we picked a very specific area to focus on which is management, security, and this one particular feature that we have called Continuum, which is a phone that can even be a desktop,”

Basically, a phone that doesn’t conventionally look like a phone.

INTERESTING. BUT WHEN IS IT COMING OUT?

For the moment, Microsoft is focused on ensuring its apps and services are available on both iOS and Android. In addition, the tech biggie has brought variation in its hardware with products like Surface. Many would like to believe that the new phones would follow a similar technology. But the fact of the matter is, Microsoft is not ready for that yet. The new phone will operate on Windows 10 and it is expected that the phone restructuring would be finalized by June. There’s no specific release date yet.

MEANWHILE…

Earlier this week, Microsoft introduced Windows 10 S with much fanfare as a slimmed-down, fast, version of its money-making operating system. The goal is to make it available on inexpensive PCs that will be attractive to budget-minded schools, where Google Chromebooks running Google’s Chrome OS and Google Search have done very well.

That’s probably why Windows 10 S, according to the product’s web site, “works exclusively with compatible apps from the Windows Store.” Chrome is not available there. In short, if you are getting Windows 10 S, you can’t run Google on it. Competition’s getting hot and how1

VERIZON GIVES UP CLOUD SERVICES TO IBM

THE STORY

IBM buys out Verizon’s fledgling cloud and managed hosting services.

BUT DIDN’T VERIZON DID THE SAME WITH YAHOO AND AOL!

As they say, you win some. You lose some! For the moment, Verizon has given up on its ‘Cloud Dream’. “Last week, Verizon agreed to sell its cloud and managed hosting service to IBM,” said George Fischer, Group President of Verizon Enterprise Solutions.

BUT THAT COULD BE A COSTLY COMPROMISE FOR VERIZON…

Yes. It is. But did you know Microsoft sort of failed to tap the search engine boom and Google saw the potential in social networking but could never capitalize on it. That’s a part and parcel of being in the tech industry.

WHAT’S NEXT FOR VERIZON THEN?

Verizon gave up its public cloud business last year, and this move now signals the death of the private cloud side of things. The team will continue to provide enterprise connectivity services, though that will be little compensation for the potential fortunes to be made in the wider cloud computing sector.

Complications in its core telco business possibly proved too much of a distraction, however the saga surrounding Yahoo certainly didn’t help.

Well, we can only wait and watch if Verizon can shake off this setback and come up with better things.
