WANNACRY NOW BEING LINKED WITH CHINESE SPEAKING HACKERS

THE STORY

Analysis of Wannacry ransom note reveals hackers were fluent in Chinese language.

WHAT DID THE STUDY REVEAL?

Although earlier studies of the devastating Wannacry ransomware pointed blatantly at North Korea, despite the lack of proper evidence. However, this time analysts suggest that there is a possible link between the cyberattack and China. This was based on the study of ransom note, which was displayed in around 28 different languages. Researchers suggest that the notes have been created by a person who was fluent in Chinese language. They also said that only the Chinese and English text was written by a human and rest all phrases were simply copied from Google Translate.  Nevertheless, even the english text has it’s share of flaws with unusual sentences.

WHAT ABOUT NORTH KOREA NOW?

While most fingers were pointed at North Korean hackers being involved earlier, things have certainly changed now as even the Korean text was copied from Google Translate. Moreover, linguistic analysis of the chinese text shows the writer using a dialect or style that is more common with Southern China, Hong-Kong, Singapore and Taiwan.

WHAT WOULD AUTHORITIES DO ABOUT THIS?

But authorities are certainly not jumping to any conclusions about this matter as hackers are known to deliberately cause errors to confuse researchers. Nevertheless, there are amateur errors in this Malware that makes it totally unusual among any other cyberattacks witnessed in the past. The director of Asia-Pacific research Mr. Jon Condra also said “The relationship between North Korea and China, especially in intelligence domains, is probably much more complicated than widely appreciated.” This statement clearly suggests that authorities aren’t ruling out any possibilities in this matter.
