With this blog we have reached the second last year of the 90’s decade ie. 1998. The two years in which the market was full with many gadgets were 1996 and 1998. And they did open new doors to developments and advancements in the technology.
Let’s take a look at the amazing gadgets of the year 1998, the basic models of new technology which went through further developments gave us the gadgets that we have today and will have in future.
1. Seiko Message Watch –
The Japan based Seiko Holdings Company, or Seiko was founded in 1881 as small watch and jewelry store. With time company started to grow and manufactured their own clocks, followed by watches, electronic devices, semiconductors, jewelries and optical products.
Seiko Message Watches was like a pager in the size and shape of a watch.
People enjoyed texting to their friend’s watches. Message watches could receive messages which are very simple and very short ones. The watch had the two-line display and the words were eventually split to be displayed.
2. Mercedes-benz Smart Keys –
A smart key is an electronic access and authorization of system that has now become a standard equipment that comes with all the cars these days. These smart keys were first developed by Siemens and introduced by Mercedes-Benz with the name of “Key-less Go” in 1998.
With these keys the driver can unlock, lock, and start the car without taking the keys out of your pocket. The key has a radio pulse generator in its housing, which sends the signal to the antennas in the car’s bodywork. Through this connection link we are able to perform the functions on the car.
3. Bose Aviation Headset X –
Bose introduced their eagerly awaited Aviation Headset X in 1998 in EAA AirVenture Oskhosh. Bose pioneered active noise reducing headsets nearly 20 years ago, and pilots continue to prefer the Bose Aviation Headset X today. The rare combination of features mentioned below distinguish Aviation Headset X from all other pilot headsets:
a. Acoustic Noise Cancelling headset technology reduces unwanted noise, allowing improved intelligibility of radio and intercom audio.
b. There are small microphones in each earcup which monitor ambient sound.
c. It electronically tunes the frequency response, enabling outstanding audio performance for improved speech intelligibility.
d. TriPort Acoustic headset structure design which is manufactured by Bose only, makes the headset small and lightweight. There is small mass of air inside the TriPort vents which helps in efficiently reducing the low-frequency noise and blocks the high-frequency noise from entering the earcup.
4. Sony VAIO 505 GX –
Sony VAIO 505 series was a line of ultraportable and super slim notebook computer until some years. The unique configuration of it comprises of 200MHz or 266MHz Pentium MMX CPU, 32 MB RAM, a 2.1 GB hard drive, 10.4 inch SVGA screen, integrated sound, modem, speakers, microphone, PC-Card slot and optional firewire port. It also featured a touchpad with additional pen to give it a graphics tablet functionality.
The one thing about the laptop that is different from the ones launched before it is the color. Sony VAIO launched the laptop with a metallic silver and purple colored number, which surely caught the attention from a lot of people.
5. Canon PowerShot A –
The Canon PowerShot A is a series of digital cameras by Canon. Canon digital cameras series begin with A5 which were a very basic point-and-shoot camera line. It was followed by Axx series which offered full manual control in fairly bulky body. A5xx, A6xx and A7xx were the series of digital cameras that followed.
The PowerShot A720 IS was among the popular digital cameras of the year 1998. It offered strong feature set and good degree of user control at a competitive price. The highlights of the specifications are as follow:
a. 8.0 Megapixels.
b. Optical image Stabilizer
d. 17 shooting modes including VGA movies (30fps) with sound
e. DIGIC III processor with face detection AF/AE
f. Optional accessories available, including Underwater Case
6. Game Boy Color –
The Game Boy Color is a handheld game console, an advanced version of Game boy by Nintendo. As the name suggests, it features a color screen, but no backlight. Like the Game Boy, it has a custom 8-bit processor related to Zilog Z80 CPU.
The screen with 32, 786 color palettes has a resolution of 160×144 pixels and at a moment it can display up to 10, 32 or 56 colors simultaneously. For audio functionality, it has 2 square wave channels, 1 wave channel, 1 noise channel, mono speaker and stereo jack headphone.
The various Pokemon games helped the Game Boy Color and GameBoy to sell over 115 million units combinedly. The one of the prominent feature of the Game Boy Color is it allows the gameplay in maximum of fifty-six colors to simultaneously appear on the screen. It requires two AA batteries.
7. Mustek ScanExpress Image Scanner –

Garmin Ltd. is an American multinational technology company founded by Gary Burrell and Min Kao. Garmin is known for its specialization in GPS Technology to be used in automotive, aviation, marine, outdoor and sport activities and utilities.
The eTrex series includes several models with different features and options and the original model was nicknamed “eTrex Yellow”. It was the lightweight, waterproof, palm sized 12-channel GPS receiver and something best-suited for backpackers, hikers and others afoot in remote areas. It has a battery life of up to 22 hours with 2 AA-size batteries.
Some of the good things are:
- One handed use
- Splash proof
- Very widespread, so well-supported for accessories.
