Newsletter: Google’s Android Aping Apple? & Amazon Working on AI For Alexa

QUOTE OF THE DAY

“Our generation grew up with technology. It evolved as we grew up. This new generation has had it since they were babies. That’s crazy. It fundamentally changes the way they understand and think about technology. They’ve never known life without it, whereas we knew life without the Internet.” ~ Brit Morin

ANDROID’S OVERHAUL FOR NEXT GEN SMARTPHONES

THE STORY

Google is working on imitating Apple’s “Notch” for Android to be in the game for a longer run.

WHAT IS THE GOOGLE’S PLAN?

In 2017, Apple launched mighty iPhone X with other two variants of iPhone. iPhone X is one of its kind with its Notch and other distinct features.  the price tag has stopped a lot of people from owning the device. Although, it has still gained popularity worldwide.  Bottom line, Google has noticed the same and is working on revamping Android mobile software for the future smartphones.

There is an ulterior motive behind the overhaul. Google wants to coax more iPhone users to switch to Android by giving them a better-looking interface.

Well, it is an unspoken truth that Android rules the market globally but Apple still fascinates high-end users. Google’s move to adopt the “Notch” might change the scenario. Moreover, the design if adopted will make room for other sensors and camera on the device. In this way, Android phones will be able to keep up with Apple phones.

WHAT COULD WE EXPECT?

With the Android update, which is expected to come later in the year, we will get better integration with Google’s digital assistant, enhancement in battery life of smartphones and support to new designs for future generations.

The refresh of an operating system is called as Android P. It will focus on Google’s Assistant. Moreover, with the revamp the developers will be able to assimilate Google’s voice-based technology into their apps. This is not it, there would be a lot more changes introduced with the overhaul. It is the time which will tell what would be accepted or mocked on!

WHAT COULD BE THE ISSUE?

Unlike Apple, most of the old Android devices run on an older operating system which exposing them to security loopholes, which in turn is not good for Google’s reputation.  Well, Google can work on embracing the change with the software but as the devices are manufactured by its partners, agreeing all of them for the same can be a challenge. Especially when Samsung publicly ridicule the idea.

Currently only Essential, a smartphone by Android’s former boss Andy Rubin is the only major contender with the feature. However, according to sources, other companies like Huawei Technologies Co. are working on the same concept.

AMAZON WORKING ON CUSTOM AI CHIPS FOR ALEXA

THE STORY

Just like Google and Apple, Amazon is supposedly working on custom AI chips for Alexa.

WHY THE AI CHIPS?

There’s certainly a hidden strategy, each time a tech giant releases an upgrade for their top product. Either to improve the quality of the products or services or to stay in competition with the rest. Amazon too, is working on designing an artificial intelligence chip that would enhance the quality and response time of Alexa for future Echo devices.

The long-term plan behind this step is to manufacture Alexa-powered products which can do more on-device processing to reduce the response time, rather than communicating with the cloud.

WHAT INSPIRED THIS MOVE?

Just like Google and Apple, Amazon is trying to integrate AI hardware into Echo. AI tasks are algorithmically profound, so it needs to have custom chips for the devices and custom designed server for data servers for proper functionality.

With the all these speculations, one thing comes to our mind, as Amazon has no experience in designing and fabricating, will it not be a risk to get indulge into something new and different. However, if it did succeed in so, it might come up as a threat for Nvidia and Intel as the companies have shifted their focus to AI chips, given the market demand. Currently, companies like Amazon, Apple and a lot more of them depend on these two for chips.

Apple has started making its own customized GPU for iPhone.  Google, on the other hand, has developed its own AI hardware for years. This makes these tech giants less reliable to a long chain of suppliers to get parts to assemble their products. Now, it looks like Amazon is all ready to join the shift.
