iPhone Allows Disabling CPU Throttling In iOS 11.3

You may have come across the news in which the tech giant Apple has admitted that they suppress the CPU speed of the iPhone as the battery gets older. Apple received a lot of criticism from all over the world, although they tried to mend the situation by confessing that it was to prevent iPhones from any unexpected shutdown. However, when Apple failed to calm the immense rage of millions of customers they were forced to roll out a new feature in iOS 11.3 to disable the throttling of CPU.

How to Use Battery Health Feature

As per Apple, Battery Health Feature will include information on maximum battery capacity and peak performance capability. Maximum battery capacity calculates the capacity of the battery compared to its initial state i.e. when it was new while peak performance capability is the capability of iPhone to deliver the performance at its best.

  1. Now getting back to the point to access Battery Health feature, open Settings menu by tapping on Settings icon.
  2. Now in the Settings menu tap on Battery Option.

3. Now in the battery option you will find an all new option of Battery Health. Now tap on Battery Health.

Now, in the Battery Health, you will find two options, Maximum Capacity and Peak Performance Capability. Maximum Capacity is the measure for the capacity of battery compared to when it was in brand new condition. The maximum capacity that is currently showing 100 % means that the battery’s health is excellent. This will slowly go down as the battery and device get older.

As per Apple, a normal battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 500 complete charge cycles when operating under normal conditions.

Now moving onto to the next option, Peak Performance Capability that tracks whether the current condition of battery is supporting peak performance or not. If your battery is in good health then under Peak Performance Capability will show that your battery is currently supporting normal peak performance. This means that the processing of CPU is not throttled.

But with passage of time when the battery fails to deliver peak power and your phone faces an unexpected shutdown, the Performance Management will be automatically applied.  The same will be notified under Peak Performance Capability, “This iPhone has experienced an unexpected shutdown because the battery was unable to deliver the necessary peak power. Performance management has been applied to help prevent this from happening again.”.

What all this means is that the CPU of your iPhone will be throttled to avoid unexpected shutdowns.

But now with iOS 11.3 you have an option to disable the Power Management feature by tapping on Disable option. However please note that once you disable this feature there is no way to turn it back on. As it will automatically enable when an unexpected shutdown occurs. Also, you will again get the option to disable it.

In another scenario if the operating system of your iPhone fails to determine battery health then a message will appear under Peak Performance Capability and ask you to service the battery from an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

As per Apple, in case iOS finds a significant degradation in battery then it will show the following message and ask for replacement of battery:

Your battery’s health is significantly degraded. An Apple Authorized Service Provider can replace the battery to restore full performance and capacity. More about service options…

Apple also clarifies that the above message does not indicate that there is a safety issue with the battery as you can continue with it as before. But you may face more issues with battery and performance.

So, guys, iOS 11.3 is just around the corner and once released you can have more control over the performance of CPU and can disable throttling of CPU caused due to wear and tear in the battery.
