SOCIAL MEDIA: A ROOT TO ISSUES THAT WE NEVER KNEW EXISTED

THE STORY

With social media connecting people all around the world, it has gained the power to influence the masses both negatively and positively.

WHY HAS FACEBOOK BECOME MORE OF A PLATFORM FOR JEALOUSY, HATRED AND VIOLENCE?

Facebook has been facing a lot of accusations and speculations. Whether it is the involvement of it in jeopardizing US elections or spreading hate speeches, things have not been good for Facebook. The thing to ponder over here is why Facebook has become the target to spread any of the negative elements in the society. Wasn’t it developed to enhance the communication and widen the circle of connectivity across the world?

A few days back, Cambridge Analytica’s CEO revealed how Facebook was involved in the US election agenda. Though the data was accessed illegally. After a day the news broke out about the involvement, Facebook stocks went down and the social media giant was surrounded by a crescendo of questions.

The most recent thing that hit Facebook is the statement by the co-founder of Whatsapp Brian Acton. His post on Twitter says: It is time. #deletefacebook.

brian acton delete facebook

It seems like he is also anti-Facebook or it’s just a repressed emotion of him being denied to be the part of Facebook back in 2009. Whatever it may be! Within Nine hours of his aforementioned post made people think why in hell someone is pleading to delete Facebook account. Well, then given the recent incidents, this is just one of the repercussions and looks like there is more to come.

The thing that added fuel to the fire, was the silence posed by Facebook during all the scandal.  Nothing but an explanation or a statement is expected to come out of it to suppress some of the speculations. What’s appalling is that CEO Mark Zuckerberg chose to like a photo posted by CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek and a status update by an early investor Don Graham rather than commenting on the burning topic which could tarnish Facebook’s reputation.

HAS TWITTER JOINED THE LEAGUE?

Well, this one doesn’t surprise us that much as social media seems to be on the brink of falling into a deep pit. Moreover, Twitter has not been actually the role model when it comes to scandals and speculations. A recent incident shows that Twitter has violated Women’s human rights. Well, this seems to be one of the most sensitive topics across the world. According to Amnesty International ’s new report, Twitter has failed to ensure online safety of women and to show that it is up against abuse, and violence. This NGO which focuses on human rights stressed on the issue and deliberately highlighted it as a concern with human rights so that Twitter sternly work that way. In return, it will promote transparency in policy changes and how the company is changing them.

The human rights researcher Azmina Dhrodia stated, “Twitter’s failure to adequately and consistently enforce their own policies is leading women to either silence or censor themselves online. So women are either leaving the platform, they’re thinking five or six times over before they post anything, they’re taking social media breaks. They’re coming up with a whole bunch of different coping mechanisms in order to avoid violence and abuse because they know by speaking out, it’s not going to be dealt with.”

IS FACEBOOK DOING ANYTHING TO GET RID OF THE TAINTED IMAGE?

With Federal Trade Commission looking into the handling of personal data on Facebook, things have gone to the next level. The FTC will inspect whether social media platform has infringed a 2011 agreement over data privacy. This is the result of the recent incident which suggests that Global Science Research got information related to 50 million Facebook profiles and provided the data to Cambridge Analytica.

When Facebook was asked about the views on inspection, the company stated, “We remain strongly committed to protecting people’s information. We appreciate the opportunity to answer questions the FTC may have.”

Finally, a statement by Facebook spokesperson came, she stated, “Mark, Sheryl and their teams are working around the clock to get all the facts and take the appropriate action moving forward because they understand the seriousness of this issue. The entire company is outraged we were deceived. We are committed to vigorously enforcing our policies to protect people’s information and will take whatever steps are required to see that this happens.”

WHY TWITTER NEEDS OTHERS TO TELL WHAT IS HAPPENING ON THE PLATFORM?

The discussion of dependency on people and communities to report abuse or offensive comments on the platform has always been an odd thing. Why Social media platforms could not figure out the way to deal with all of it if the issue is not reported.

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey has announced that they need help in addressing an issue which concerns security and abuse against users. Taking help from users will not always work as there are chances of missing out on things which doesn’t concern a user. Don’t you think, there should be a better algorithm to keep a check on all these things?

Amnesty International performed a quantitative and qualitative research which was based on the interviews with 86 women and genderqueer people including politicians, journalists and everyday users across the UK and the U.S in which they were asked to tell their experiences with a social media platform in general. The outcome was dissatisfying.

According to the report, Twitter was constantly brought up as the platform wherein women faced violence and abuse and also felt the negligence from the company’s end. The first part of the report showed what type of abuse or violence Twitter will not tolerate. The other part was data which showed how responsive Twitter is against all the reported abuse and offensive comments. Another part is to make sure that the decisions made by Twitter to limit specific content are constant with international human rights law.

Though Twitter is trying to step up and improve the services as this seems to the black era for social media, every effort done by the social media platforms to rise up would be under the microscope.  Well, if a day would come when Twitter doesn’t need third party help to check health metrics on the platform, it could be the true evolution.

WILL THIS PUT AN END TO SOCIAL MEDIA ADDICTION?

With all these speculations and revelation of truth, data coming up to support theories of involvement of social media platform in increasing hatred, violence and abuse, has demeaned the use of social media. It doesn’t matter how it makes our lives easy as right now, there is a wildfire and negligence of the social media platforms is adding insult to the injury.

If things will not get better, it could be the start of an end of addiction and influence of social media. Well, not abruptly but eventually yes! So all the social media platforms have to prioritize and take a stand!
