Newsletter: Alexa Will Have Memory & Snap Spectacle Got an Update

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Being nerdy just means being passionate about something, including everyone – the coolest people on Earth are passionate and therefore nerdy about something whatever it is, whether it’s sports, or gaming, or technology, or fashion, or beauty, or food, or whatever.” ~ Zachary Levi

NOW ALEXA CAN RECALL THINGS FOR A LONGER TIME

THE STORY

With the latest update, Alexa will be able to remember things for a longer time.

DOES THIS MEAN ALEXA WILL BE SMARTER AND MORE ENGAGING?

With upcoming update, Alexa will be more intelligent and much smarter. It will be able to recall the information that you asked her to recollect. Moreover, you can experience more natural conversations with her and it will respond to the questions asked. Doesn’t it seem to be the best thing of having smart speakers?

Ruhi Sarikaya, the head of the Alexa Brain Group, broke the news in a keynote presentation at the World Wide Web Conference in Lyon, France. He went on describing how his team, Alexa Brain has aimed to enhance Alexa’s capability to trail context and store it within, engage herself in conversation to make it more natural. This will make exploring and collaborate with Alexa fun.

The update is coming soon for US users and this memory update will make Alexa remember things that you asked her and fetch it later. This is one of the much-needed updates as Google is using memory feature as a major weapon, which makes having it on Alexa obvious to stay in the competition.

WHAT ARE OTHER FEATURES INTRODUCED?

Another installment of the new features is Alexa’s ability to get engaged in natural conversations with a user. This all will be possible due to “context carryover.” With this, Alexa will be able to understand and respond to follow-up questions even if you have not used Alexa in a follow-up question.

According to Sarikaya, the feature works on deep learning models applied to the spoken language understanding channel, which makes it possible for Alexa to interlink a question and another question followed by it.

For example: If we ask Alexa, “What is the weather in NYC?” And then ask, “How about this Friday?”. Alexa will be able to understand the link and will respond accordingly.

To avail the feature, you need to do enable Follow Up mode, this will make Alexa respond to follow-up question without the wake word.

The feature is coming soon for U.S., U.K., and Germany Alexa device users.

Yet another feature is awaited to come to Alexa to enhance its skills. The incorporation of third-party apps to make users’ life easier. With these voice apps and Alexa, you can book a cab, check credit card info and more.

These updates are some of the installments which are examples of Amazon’s endeavor to enhance Alexa’s skills.

IS THERE ANYTHING LEFT?

With the announcement of these new features, Sarikaya also mentioned that there is still work left to be done.

He said, “We have many challenges still to address, such as how to scale these new experiences across languages and different devices, how to scale skill arbitration across the tens of thousands of Alexa skills, and how to measure experience quality,” he says. “Additionally, there are component-level technology challenges that span automatic speech recognition, spoken language understanding, dialog management, natural language generation, text-to-speech synthesis, and personalization.”

“Skills arbitration, context carryover, and the memory feature are early instances of a class of work Amazon scientists and engineers are doing to make engaging with Alexa more friction-free,” Sarikaya continues. “We’re on a multi-year journey to fundamentally change human-computer interaction, and as we like to say at Amazon, it’s still Day 1.”

SNAP SPECTACLES GOT AN UPDATE, NOW IS WATER RESISTANCE AND HAS FASTER UPLOADS

THE STORY

Snap is ready to launch the second generation of its Spectacles wearable camera with water resistance, improved audio quality and lot more.

WHAT IS NEW?

After failed attempt to make Snap Spectacles a success, the company is ready to make another try. The second gen of Spectacles is said to be improved with faster uploads, as it will help you upload photos taken to Snapchat with four times faster speed. The enhanced audio quality for videos is another addition, now you can press and hold to take a photo and also has water resistance quality.

There has been a change in design as well. Now Snap Specs are slimmer and can fit into your pants pockets. Moreover, the carrying case is smaller than before too. Now photos and videos captured in high definition, with photo resolution 1642 x 1642, and video resolution 1216 x 1216 which is an improvement of 25% if compared to the earlier model.

The company when launched Spectacles in 2016, was so confident that it claimed itself as a “camera” company and even dropped “chat” from its name. However, Snap Spectacles was a flop show as the company announced a $40 million loss in November due to unsold Spectacles.

Snap Specs will be available in the United States, France the United Kingdom and Canada starting today. It will be available in Norway, Belgium, Poland, Italy, Ireland, Spain, Finland, Netherlands and Denmark from May 3rd.

All this seems to strive to bring back the Snap Specs in the game.

WHAT WENT WRONG EARLIER?

If you are Snap lover, then you must know that this proved to be a blunder for Snap Inc, a costly one indeed. Even with cool design and different perspective, Spectacles didn’t get success as presumed.

The people who bought Spectacles didn’t use them for a longer time which was disappointing. This totally means that Spectacles lack the ability to engage users. The first gen seemed to be a toy more than Spectacles. This was a failure in hardware on Snap Inc. part. It is stupefying to see the company trying its hands again with the product after such miserable outcome of the first gen. Another attempt has a monetary motive behind it, as hardware has more room to do better business. This is a much-needed endeavor after failures and loss that it suffered last year. If this thing works, it could help Snap Inc. supposedly overcome all the losses

WHAT ARE THE PRICES AND COLOR OPTIONS AVAILABLE?

Snap Spectacles will be available in three jewel tones: ruby (red), sapphire (blue) and onyx (black). You can purchase them at Spectacles.com for $150 — $20 from today onwards.
