NEW AUTHORIZATION PROCESS FOR POLITICAL ADS GOES LIVE IN US

THE STORY

With a series of charges for handling political ads, Facebook has announced the new authorization process for political ads in the US, all set to go live today.

WHY DID THINGS COME TO THIS?

Facebook’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg, stated in front of the Congress, that the company would make various changes regarding the political ads, which also includes the political issue ads and how will the company handle these ads. He said that, individuals who would buy a political ad, will have to reveal their identities and location, so that the verification could be done before the ad goes live.

With the expansion to this, earlier this month, Facebook said, not only the person who is tied to an election, but also the person who is debating about the issue must reveal his/her identity and has to go through the verification process.

Facebook will work along with the third parties to identify and resolve the issue. These ads will be labelled as ‘Political Ads’, which will display the information about the person who has posted the ad.

HOW WILL VERIFICATIONS BE DONE?

Verification process has just only started in US. The page admins and the ad account admins are required to submit their government issued ID’s. A government ID can include U.S. Driver’s License or a U.S. Passport. While filling the details, last 4 digits of admins Social Security Number (SSN) is also required.

  • Page admins and the ad account admins will have to submit their residential mailing address as well. A mailing letter will be sent to the respective mailing address with a unique code access that can only be used by the admin’s Facebook account.
  • After submitting all the details, photo ID of the admin will get approved or denied within minutes. In case of bad quality photo uploads, individual will have to try again with the process.
  • With an add-on to the above process, admins will have to mention the names of the individual(s) or organization(s) who has invested in the ad in the ‘Disclaimer’ section.

All the information will be checked before the ad gets approved. On which Facebook said,

“We’ll review each disclaimer to make sure it adheres to our advertising policies. You can edit your disclaimers at any time, but after each edit, your disclaimer will need to be reviewed again, so it won’t be immediately available to use.”

This process might not be available for all the Facebook users in US, as it has just begun to roll out.

26% GROWTH IN FIRST QUARTER OF GOOGLE’S REVENUE

THE STORY

Google’s parent company, Alphabet, has once again continued to keep its business growing significantly at a rapid speed. Google earned 26% growth from the last year’s (2017), first quarter (JAN-MAR) revenue.

HOW MUCH DID GOOGLE EARN THIS QUARTER IN 2018?

Google earned about 31.16 Billion U.S. Dollars in the first quarter of the year 2018, which is 26% more than the last year’s first quarter that was 24.75 Billion U.S. Dollars.

Last to last year, growth between the consecutive year first quarters was reported to be 22%.

Let’s take a look at the scorecard:

  • Revenue: $31.16 billion, and up 26% year-over-year.
  • Earnings: $9.93 per share adjusted, compared to $9.28 per share from Wall Street
  • Other Revenues: $4.35 billion, up from $3.27 billion in Q1 last year (2017)
  • Other Bets: $150 million, up from $132 million in Q1 2017
  • Other Bets losses: $571 million, down from $703 million in the Q1 last year (2017)
  • Effective tax rate: 11%, down from 20% in Q1 2017
  • TAC (Traffic Acquisition Rate) as a % of Revenue: 24%

WHAT IS THE REASON FOR GROWTH?

All this is a little complicated. But at last Google is growing faster year after year. The reason for the growth this quarter is reported to be the new projects included in Alphabet ‘Other Bets’.

The projects like autonomous balloons and vehicles, bought an add-on to the revenue.

Google’s TAC or traffic acquisition cost, appears to also remain stable as a percentage of its revenue, which is currently sitting stably at 24%.

As Google is the biggest advertising platform, that makes money from billions of users from all around the world. But unfortunately, their advertising business has gone down in revenue. However, due to inconsistencies in mobile behavior, most ads often went unnoticed. But still Google’s revenue has seen massive growth in the past few years.
