Google Bans Crypto Mining Extensions and Ads: End of Cryptojacking?

Aah Google! When you pull up your socks to get stuff done, you really get going. In a recent company post, Google has made it adamantly clear that it is cracking down on all cryptocurrency related advertising and extensions. This news has been received by a mixed reaction by the public at large.

Crypto Jacking: So Long, Farewell, We Gladly Say Goodbye

Previously, Google had banned many hidden crypto mining extensions (commonly called cryptojacking) due to Archive Poster, a since deleted Chrome extension. It has caused a lot of embarrassment to the company at the time of its discovery. But, the recent update from them is that they are now issuing a blanket ban on all extensions that support crypto mining. Even those extensions that that are openly designed for mining purpose will be banned.

In a turn of events, it has now decided to ban even cryptocurrency related ads from its platform. Google’s director of sustainable ads, Scott Spencer is reportedly quoted saying “We don’t have a crystal ball to know where the future is going to go with cryptocurrencies, but we’ve seen enough consumer harm or potential for consumer harm that it’s an area that we want to approach with extreme caution.”

This dual crackdown which shall be implemented from July 2018 onwards is sure to spell doom for ‘Cryptojackers’ all around.

Crypto Jacking: Thy days art numbered

Google rules the roost as the most popular search engine online. So, when a giant like Google says ‘NO’, others are sure to follow.

Though in reality, Google is not the first to try and curb cryptocurrency related irregularities. Why just last month, Twitter too had announced that it had plans of blocking all cryptocurrency ads that feature on its platform.

Surprisingly, Facebook, who has no regards for user’s privacy and data, banned ads promoting cryptocurrencies. They included Bitcoin and ICOs.

With shutdowns on major social media platforms, and of course the biggest web browser of all aka Google, cryptojackers shall have a tough time ahead. Looking at the still upcoming market, mainstream cryptocurrency implementation is being looked at with a lot of interest by the public. May be by eradicating such bad apples, Blockchain technology and cryptocurrencies shall get their moment in the sun. To further clarify, Google has shed light on the fact that all Blockchain extensions that are without any mining functions are welcome and under no danger of being banned at any time in the near future. After all, Blockchain is the technology that shall tide us over to new age decentralization.
