THE STORY

Apple plans to launch Apple News with a premium option

WHAT ARE APPLE’S PLANS FOR APPLE NEWS?

According to various sources, Apple acquired magazine app Texture recently and now has plans to incorporate it into Apple News. It will launch a premium subscription service. This seems to be a step by Apple to get more revenue from online content and services.

The smartphone giant bought Texture, which made it possible for users to subscribe more than 200 magazines for $9.99 a month. After an acquisition, it let go 20 employees of Texture.

Now, it is incorporating Texture technology and the rest of the employees to Apple News team with the aim to build the premium service. The version of Apple News with the subscription offering is anticipated to launch next year.

WHY THE CHANGE?

When started in 2015, Apple News was launched, it used the similar approach that of Newsstand. Newsstand consisted of various newspapers and magazines, however, the publications were proffered on an individual subscription basis.

Change in which a simple subscription service covers multiple publications is expected to get a hike in usage and generate revenue as well. It is just like Apple Music, which we take for $9.99 per month to get access to an unlimited uninterrupted music library. Apple Music also expanded in the same way by acquiring Beats Music & Beats audio device business in 2014 for $3 billion.

Before the acquisition, Beats Music had less number of subscribers but after it, Apple increased the number paying users until 40 million

According to sources, achieving the level of success of the Beats deal with the Apple News will be challenging. Well, it is a much-needed success to meet services division targets. Sales from that segment got hiked from 23 percent to $30 billion in 2017’s fiscal year. The next target is to achieve services revenue of roughly $50 billion by 2021. According to the current stats provided by Apple shows that it had a total of 240 million paid subscriptions, with 58 percent year-over-year growth.

Right now, Apple offers subscriptions for Apple Music and iCloud storage. Other sources of services revenue are App Store downloads, iTunes music, TV shows, and movies purchases, digital book downloads, and Apple Pay transactions.
