IOS UPDATE SHIELD AGAINST THE GRAYKEY PHONE-CRACKING TOOL

THE STORY

Apple has plans to release an iOS update, which will block the hacking tool, Graykey from accessing latent iPhones.

WHAT’S GRAYKEY AND HOW IT WORKS?

From last few months, across the country police is using a device named as GrayKey, which help them to access and unlock dormant iPhones. It is a clandestine technique to circumvent Apple’s default disk encryption. GrayKey is presently used by five federal agencies in five different states.  It is a new technique used by police to collect evidence from encrypted phones and tablets.

GrayKey software can be used by downloading and installing low-level tool from iPhone’s Lightning port. The iPhone can run GrayKey software on its own after entering the targeted device into the GrayKey device. It will show them all the passwords on the iPhones screen within 2- 3 hours, once the installation process is completed.

HOW IS APPLE GOING TO DEFEND AGAINST THE GRAYKEY?

Apple is planning to launch a new update to iOS to make Graykey ineffective to access Apple devices. These new changes if introduced would induce tension between device manufacturers and law enforcement.

With the new update, iPhones will discontinue all the communication through the USB port in case the device is not been unlocked in the last one hour. As the set time limit will end, the USB port would be only used for charging the device. So, the entire procedure will give a limited and tiny time window to police to use GrayKey devices properly.

After launching the new update, it will close the loopholes and class of attacks that take place from the iPhone’s Lightning port including all those attacks that follow GrayKey skills.  As per Apple, this new alteration is a general security update instead of answering the law enforcement.

According to the statement of an Apple representative; “We’re constantly strengthening the security protections in every Apple product to help customers defend against hackers, identity thieves, and intrusions into their personal data,” he also said, “We have the greatest respect for law enforcement, and we don’t design our security improvements to frustrate their efforts to do their jobs.”

There is an amazing feature known as “USB Restricted Mode,” which is currently available in the betas for iOS 12 as well as for iOS 11.4.1. However, the company hasn’t confirmed that USB Restricted Mode would be present in iOS 12.
