Newsletter: Google Brings Titan For Cloud Security & Watch Party Coming To All Groups

QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“There is a wide, yawning black infinity. In every direction, the extension is endless; the sensation of depth is overwhelming. And the darkness is immortal. Where light exists, it is pure, blazing, fierce; but light exists almost nowhere, and the blackness itself is also pure and blazing and fierce.” ~ Carl Sagan

GOOGLE BRINGS TITAN CHIPSET TO ENHANCE CLOUD SECURITY

THE STORY

Google works on Cloud security issues and is planning to launch chipset Titan.

WHAT IS GOOGLE UPTO?

Google is making progress in the cloud industry. It’s recent attempt to reach the sky is by making cloud services secure. The plan is to launch a small chipset, Titan. Google representative explained that due to increased cyber-criminal activities, an increment in the security of the hardware supporting Google’s cloud platform is important and hence decided to introduce the chipset.

Titan concentrates on two key processes, with first being, verifying the system firmware & software components and second establishing strong, hardware-rooted system identity. The former ensures the machine is secure. The chipset uses public key cryptography to determine the security of its own firmware and host as well. The latter verifies the identity of a machine. The process is related to the chip manufacturing process. Every chip comes with unique embedded keying material attached to the registry database. The components of the database are cryptographically protected with the help of keys maintained by the Titan Certification Authority.

HOW WILL IT WORK?

When Titan chip is built into a server, it generates certificate signing requests directed to the Titan Certificate Authority (CA). Then, CA verifies the originality of certificate signing requests (CSR) on the basis of keying material present in the registry database. Once it is done, it issues an identity certificate to the server, which founds the root of trust.

This verification process supports non-repudiable audit trail of any changes made to the system. If any changes are made to firmware or software, it is highlighted.

HOW WILL IT ADDRESS CLOUD SECURITY CONCERNS?

This addition in the form of the chipset to Google cloud servers will establish “hardware root of trust” for machines and peripherals connected to the cloud infrastructure. With this ability, Google can recognize & validate legitimate access at hardware level within Google Cloud Platform. It is just a part of Google’s bigger plan to increase the security of its cloud infrastructure.

WHAT DOES IT ALL MEAN?

If a server that stores information is secure, then the cloud is also secure. With all the components verified, be it the hardware, firmware or software components, a Titan-enabled machine will be authenticated and ready to be part of GCP ecosystem.

FACEBOOK’S WATCH PARTY IS COMING TO ALL GROUPS

THE STORY

Facebook’s popular feature Watch Party will soon be available for all groups.

WHY THE CHANGE?

Facebook has manifested that it wants video to be the important part of the business. Therefore, for a couple months, the social media giant has been working on it by launching features to make videos to be more social. One such feature is Watch Party introduced in January. It is a tool that enables members of Facebook groups to watch videos concurrently. This tool works for live as well as pre-recorded videos. Until now, it was only limited to a select group of people. However, soon it will be available to all groups, everywhere in the world.

With groups being the important part of the social media platform, this feature introduced will encourage people with similar interests to engage more. Facebook says that according to group leaders, this feature will be useful for members interested in how-to tutorials, Q&A sessions and more videos like that.

According to the Facebook statement in April two billion people watched Facebook Live broadcast, which showcased the potential for the growth of features like Watch Party. As people who watch together can comment or react simultaneously.

For now, the feature will be made available for groups, but it will soon come to profiles and hopefully pages. Facebook got an immense reaction while testing the feature, therefore, increasing the probability of widening the area.

WILL IT BE BENEFICIAL FOR PROFILES?

Profiles won’t necessarily have a greater audience but, Watch Party could be a great way to share viewing experiences with friends and family. The main aim is to keep users engaged with one another.

WHAT FACEBOOK HAS TO SAY?

Erin Connolly, Facebook’s product manager of the social video said that the social media giant will make sure Watch Party is safe for everyone. She further told that Facebook will depend on group admin and other users to report any abusive/harmful content. She said, “Keeping the community safe is something that’s really important to us,”, “and [that’s] a responsibility we take really seriously across Facebook.”

Connolly also said that Facebook will keep on investing in systems that can assist in detecting probably unsafe material on Facebook faster. She said, “This is something that we care deeply about. We’ll be obviously monitoring really closely, and continuing to hear feedback from the community to make sure that this is going well.”

“We really want to bring people front and center, to the end-to-end video experience,” Connolly added. “Watch Party really embodies a lot of our social video vision.”
