Blockchain For the World of Humanitarian Aid

Blockchain For the World of Humanitarian Aid

The ability of human race to process and document everyday experiences, sense pain and happiness and make more humane decisions are some of the characteristics of humanity. Something that is innate to human beings and cannot be developed artificially. On the other hand, our everyday lives have become deeply entwined with technology. In this blog, we are covering Blockchain for humanitarian aid and how it can help or destroy humanitarian process.

Whether it is our sense of personal identity, social relationships, our ideas about privacy, or the ability to make more ethical and personal decisions based on the information collected online. Humanity cannot be enforced to technology but both concepts are going hand in hand and have essentially become part and parcel of our lives.

The latest addition to the revolution is Blockchain. This technology is still at infancy and organizations around the world are exploring its opportunities. In a short span of time, it has become a reliable source of financial transfer and influencing the market with cryptocurrencies. This is just the beginning and several industries are using this technology to ease their workflow and bring transparency and data security. But what are the humanitarian applications of Blockchain? Let us take a look.

Opportunities

With Blockchain, it is possible to realize the positive usage of technology by helping poor and needy suffering in warzone or dying due to lack of food and water.

Ending Corruption and Mismanagement

You cannot fight battles without weapons and to buy weapons, you need money. Here, the battle is referred to the ability to survive in warzone area, desolated area, underdeveloped zone, and cities lacking basic amenities. To survive this zone or even escape such adversities, money is needed. Here, Blockchain can be used for moving virtual cash that can be monitored and recorded. Also, it can help evade the possibility of mismanagement and corruption.

For instance, the United Nations made several initiatives for supplying food and water to countries like Jordan and Syria, the warzone area. However, due to lack of management and high corruption, people were denied basic amenities. In fact, there are accusations of raping women by corrupt officials, who lured them for better future and enough money.

But with Blockchain, the need for intermediaries is completely eradicated, and victims of war can directly purchase food from local shops using this technology. For instance, in Pakistan and Jordan, UN used UNHCR’s patented biometric identification system and empowered people. Blockchain can be easily accessed via smartphone and every transaction can be recorded on Blockchain and the information cannot be changed.

Refugees Documented Proof of Identity

A sense of personal identity not only empower human but is proof of their existence in this big world. A system that can record your identity by storing biometric data using Blockchain can be a great humanitarian assistance. Hence, the problem of stateless and undocumented populations can be addressed by storing their information on the decentralized platform.

Threats

The hype surrounding the technology is gaining attraction. But constraints in successful application of this technology is also high.

This technology is relatively new and complex, and not everyone can understand and implement this technology with ease. Moreover, Blockchain technology needs constant internet connection and other infrastructure, which is practically impossible in a war-driven area. Also, the technology is at infancy and has never been implemented at a wider level. Implementing such technology without any prior experiment can turn out to be disastrous. Not only it will destroy the overall relief process and effort but the use of untested technology will force humanity to distrust technology.

Since the technology is novice but has the ability to affect the community, the demand for proper law and acts becomes imminent. In the absence of such pertinent laws and failing of technology together can destroy the balance in terms of ethical and legal issues. Imagine, sensitive data falling into the hands of terrorist organizations!! Scary.

Also, what if the Blockchain gets hacked in future? Since there is no guidelines and regulation for the use or misuse of technology, it gives an opportunity to enemies to attack vulnerable population. Also, private organizations can misuse data for their own benefits.

Blockchain for humanitarian aid has immense potential in terms of storing and transferring data but we cannot ignore its threats. In such a scenario, implementing this technology can cause more harm than good. What do you think about this technology and are we in a position to implement them for humanitarian purpose.
