QUOTE OF THE DAY:

“Nothing in life is to be feared, it is only to be understood. Now is the time to understand more, so that we may fear less” – Marie Curie

FACEBOOK WITH NEW MACHINE LEARNING SYSTEM NAMED ROSETTA

THE STORY

Facebook has developed and applied a new machine learning technology dubbed as ‘Rosetta’ to understand text in images and videos.

WHAT’S ROSETTA FOR?

Facebook is continuously working with Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) to improve user experience in every way possible. This time, Facebook has developed a machine learning system ‘Rosetta’, which will help in reading and extraction of text from videos and images.

This will make Facebook more accessible for users, as it will help in more relevant photo search and also in integration of text into screen readers to make text more accessible for visually impaired Facebook users. For understanding text, Facebook is using text extraction model.

The extraction is performed in 2 steps:

  1. Text Detection: For text detection, Facebook implemented similar approach to that of Faster R-CNN, which detects and recognizes text simultaneously.
  2. Text Recognition: For text recognition, they are using CNN (Convolutional Neural Network) that is based on ResNet 18 architecture. ResNet18 architecture is good for accuracies and can be used as a sequence prediction problem.

WHAT’S NEXT?

For now, Rosetta has been deployed for several products within Facebook and Instagram. And for future updates, Facebook said,

“Motivated by Rotation Region Proposal Networks, we are working on extending Faster R-CNN with anchors of arbitrary rotations, as well as experimenting with Spatial Transformer Networks to learn and correct for arbitrary affine transformations between the detection and recognition stages.”
