There is no knowing when the obsession with faster travel started. Was it the cave man who saw the wheel invented and thought it a means of out running the lion or was it the early European explorers who made huge ships to cross the world and explore new lands and business opportunities? Soon, as time moved on, they were followed in the quest to explore new frontiers by a bunch of astronauts that explored space and eventually reached the moon. Television boom only increased the itch to move faster. The transporters on ‘Star Trek’, the Hoverboard from ‘Back to the Future 2’, the Flying Taxi in ‘The Fifth Element’ are some of the prime examples of how we envision future travels.
What has been considered a fantasy for such a long time, looks to finally be on the path of reality. The references above are from movies / tv shows of popular genre. Below mentioned are some examples of how our future public transportation can be like.
Elon Musk. This man is a genius. He is a treasure that needs to be protected at all costs. That being said, the probability of travelling at the speed of sound still feels like stuff from Sci-Fi movies. Hyperloop is the byproduct of Elon Musk’s creativity and his company Tesla and Space X’s collaboration. Travelling from one city to another in a matter of minutes is a dream that is being made into a reality by them.
Hyperloop is a solar-powered high-speed train that uses the mechanism of vacuum and touches the speed of 1.200 kms/hour and is elevated on steel tubes containing aluminum capsules. These capsules have seats for passengers and are proposed to have ‘Family’, ‘Meeting’ and ‘General’ seating options. The estimated cost of its construction is predicted to be around $ 70 Billion. The cost has many vary of implementing this service, but principalities like Dubai and Abu Dhabi have given it an open arms welcome. Fingers crossed, this makes intercity travel safe and fast. Keep your eyes open for this one folks!
2. Gyroscopic Transport:
With the multiple number of cars, busses and other vehicles on the road, there is always a sense of perpetual congestion in traffic. The cars won’t go away, as logically more and more people are buying cars and driving them to work. There is just no more space for the expansion of roads. What other option could there possibly be to zoom past all the traffic? Well, Gyroscopic Transport bus seems to be the answer.
They are oval shaped buses that drive above the cars on the road. The buses are supported by electromagnetic bands that are laid out in the middle of the road and also attached to the ‘legs’ of the bus. Though there are those who claim this is a charlatan’s scam, the technology behind it checks out. We can just hope that some big investment firm takes up this project. If not for the main roads, these gyrobuses can help tariff people within communities and housing societies.
Another fantasy sounding mode of transport which we have seen growing up, was flying cars. ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ car from the classic movie of the same name was my first exposure of to the concept of flying cars. The fact of the matter is that, the now primitive style looking flying car is still not a reality. That just breaks my heart. Irrespective, the application of flying cars is bound to have risen in the minds of geniuses in corporate car companies. One of them managed to turn it into a reality!
Another first for the principality of Abu Dhabi, UAE in collaboration with Volocopter, is called the Autonomous Air Taxi (AAT). This 2 man flying taxi service had a successful trial run September 2017. The AAT is an environmentally friendly, electricity powered prototype version. It has a maximum flight time of 30 minutes, at a cruising speed of 50 km/h (31 mph) and a maximum airspeed of 100 km/h (62 mph). Its commercial run is slated to be in the mid 2020. We are eagerly waiting for a ride in this futuristic flight of reality!
4. The Algorithmi:
The Algorithmi is a futuristic concept ship which uses solar energy to propel at almost supersonic speeds. This ship shall be created in such a manner that it caters to both cargo and passengers. This ship shall include on-board a multiple number of features. Some of which are are high-end supercomputer system, its architecture is compatible with AI for auto management and control.
It shall even have the option of ultrasound and laser sensors, radars and anti-collision systems, plus the added advantage of a 360° camera, satellite and GPS navigation systems. This once in a lifetime style of ship has the potential to be declared the Ship of the Future. Its idea has been conceived by Belkharmoudi Aziz. Hats off to you Sir!
There you have it folks. The above mentioned are some of the futuristic examples of modes in transportation that can help us save our time that is spent travelling. If you question why these should be made in the first place, then remember this. The lifestyle that we lead is such that any time that goes in travelling takes away from us either our office time or our precious family time. The compromise of juggling the two lies in shorter commute, so that this way we can focus on one or the other. We are looking into the future with stars in our eyes. You should too.
