G Suite announced that Google Hangouts will not be available to G Suite customers from October onwards. This step is to bring in new platforms to chat & meet at one place, namely, Hangouts Chat & Hangouts Meet.
G Suite also announced several changes to be made this year for G Suite customers and their end users who use classic Hangouts.
In April, several changes that require admin action will be implemented for better privacy and security. Some of the features of classic Hangouts will be inherited by Hangouts Chat as well. Down the year, G Suite has also announced retiring of classic Hangouts for G Suite customers.
What Are The Admin-Facing Changes Coming In April?
The G Suite domains, who use classic Hangouts, will be able to use Chat from web and via mobile apps after the April G Suite update. With this, they can also continue using classic Hangouts in Gmail, mobile, web or the Chrome extension.
- For Google Vault users, new Chat retention rules will be implemented to protect chat messages in both classic Hangouts and Chat, which was earlier protected by Mail retention rules.
- In Chat admin settings, admin will now be able to control chat capability in both classic Hangouts and Chat.
- New setting in the Admin console will be added to disable classic Hangouts user interface. User can use this setting under Apps > G Suite > Hangouts.
- ‘Google Hangouts’ settings page in the Admin console will be renamed as ‘Hangouts Meet’. This setting will control both classic Hangouts video and Hangouts Meet.
What’s Down The Year For G Suite Customers?
Well, down the year, from October, G Suite customers won’t be able to use classic Hangouts. All the users will be transitioned to Hangouts Chat.
