How to Handle a Frozen Mac

Thankfully it is a rare situation, which can be fixed by using few steps.

Use Force Quit Option

Force quitting your running program is the most common and easiest way to unfreeze your machine. It is likely possible that your Mac might freeze sometimes, when you run multiple programs on your system or it might happen when it does not have enough space on the hard drive. To force quit any application on your Mac follow the below steps.

  • Click on Apple icon which you will see in top right hand side corner or simultaneously press Command-Option-Esc.
  • Select Force Quit option from the drop-down list.
  • It will take you to force quite window then select the Name of the Application, which you would like to force quit.
  • After selecting the application, it will prompt you, “Are you sure you want to close this program.” Please select OK to confirm.

Restart Your Mac

If force quitting your application doesn’t works, you can restart your machine. As we know turning off and on your device, fixes tons of problems, it happens when your machine face some technical issues while running the program, however when you restart your device, it helps in clearing off the current state of the software and start over again. It is like dumping out the junk and starting fresh. When your computer doesn’t allow you to restart it properly, you can use these steps to make it work for you.

  • Press the Power button or press Control + Eject.

(Make sure you will hold the power button for several seconds)

  • Choose the Apple key and then click Restart.

Restart in Safe Mode

Safe mode is commonly known as Safe boot; this is the way to start up your Mac machine by verifying your startup disk and attempts to prevent some software from automatic loading and opening.

Note: In safe mode, only the native applications will work not the third-party application.

  • Press Power button and turn off your computer.
  • Start your Mac while holding Shift key.
  • After a few seconds, you will notice white Apple logo appears on your screen and safe boot will be written on the top right corner.
  • You may release the shift key when you see the login window.
  • Put your login credentials (It may ask you to put it twice).

Note: Restart your machine to leave the safe mode.

There are no specific reasons that why your Mac freezes, it is a rare situation. But when it happens it won’t allow you to use it for any purpose be it download, update any app or to use internet.
