FACEBOOK TRAINS AI TO HELP SUICIDAL PEOPLE
Mark Zuckerberg broadcasted that Facebook will roll out enhanced AI to keep an eye on posts that depict suicidal thoughts.
WHAT IS THE UPDATE ALL ABOUT?
Facebook has come up with a new feature that would not rely on users to flag on suspected content. The feature is to roll out in all the countries except the countries in EU due to restrictions.
The CEO in a post earlier this year said “If we’re going to build a safe community, we need to respond quickly.” He also drew attention to the fact that the company was working on assembling a faster way to find and report depressed and suicidal behavior on the platform. He also stated, “In the future, AI will be able to understand more of the subtle nuances of language, and will be able to identify different issues beyond suicide as well, including quickly spotting more kinds of bullying and hate.”
Well, you can help people to watch over the platform for such posts but getting it done by AI has its own benefits as AI will never get bored or tired. The process will never stop.
HOW WILL IT WORK?
The social media giant has new algorithms which use pattern recognition to look for posts and comments for keywords which depicts anything alarming. If the AI finds a suspected post, a message would be sent to the person who uploaded the post asking if he or she is fine.
The information collected would be sent to the Facebook employee for review. Once the employee reviews the information and finds that intercession is necessary, then it reaches out the individual through family and friends to provide help.
Zuckerberg has made a dedicated team of employees to review the content and it will grow further to 3000 dedicated workers. Other details about the AI are still unknown but Zuckerberg thinks if the AI could even save one life, it would be commendable.
WHAT ABOUT THE PRIVACY?
To monitor the post, the users have to sacrifice the privacy. As the AI could be monitoring the posts and all the communication on the platform to keep an eye on any behavior that depicts suicidal signs. There is no guarantee given to which extent, they will apply pattern recognition to the communications on the platform.
Although, if this attempt could save people’s lives whether it is a person with suicidal thoughts or the ones who are trying to live stream their death. The prying and spying of AI would be worth.
Suicide is one of the prominent ways of death in the USA and it is more common amongst people below 44. The social media giant is working for a good cause and if it succeeds in saving people’s lives then this could be one of the best tools to combat the issue.
